SUMMARY:The African Continental Free Trade Area
DESCRIPTION:On July 25th 2022\, the AfCFTA Council of Ministers announced the AfCFTA Initiative on Guided Trade\, a pilot phase of the AfCFTA that allows 7 countries\, Rwanda\, Cameroon\, Egypt\, Ghana\, Kenya\, Mauritius and Tanzania\, to begin trading under the AfCFTA regime demonstrating the functionality of the AfCFTA. It will also identify companies\, products\, customs procedures and logistics processes required to enable trade under the AfCFTA. \n \nThe AfCFTA creates a market of 1.4 billion people and a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion making it the world’s second largest free trade area by number of member-states\, after the World Trade Organization\, and the largest in terms of population and geographic size. The economic significance of an agreement of this magnitude is immense\, and if successfully implemented\, is likely to have enormous impact on business dynamics within Africa and between Africa and the rest of the world. Therefore\, the AfCFTA has created several strategic options that businesses need to assess in order to take advantage of the new opportunities that have been opened and maximize the benefits of this new reality – for themselves and for Africa. \n \nThis forum will discuss: \n\nThe implications on global value and supply chains and location of production (local & regional).\nThe implications of consolidation of 55 countries (markets) into a gigantic single market of more than 1.4bn people. \nHow lower costs of cross-border activities change the trade-off between proximity to markets and the economics of specialization and scale.

SUMMARY:The EAC 4th Band Common External Tariff
DESCRIPTION:On July 1st\, 2022\, the 35%\, 4th Band of the EAC Common External Tariff (CET) adopted by Ministers/Cabinet Secretaries in charge of Trade and Finance in the EAC came into effect . \n \nBefore the adoption of the 4th band\, the EAC CET was structured under three bands: \n•	25% for finished goods \n•	10% for intermediate goods \n•	0% for raw materials and capital goods \n \nThe 4th band includes dairy and meat products\, cereals\, cotton and textiles\, iron and steel\, edible oils and in addition: furniture\, leather products\, fresh-cut flowers\, fruits and nuts\, sugar and confectionery\, coffee\, tea and spices\, textiles and garments\, head gears\, ceramic products\, and paints\, among others. \n \nThe 4th band CET is seen as a positive step towards the promotion of industry\, intra-regional trade growth\, creation of employment\, protection of nascent industries and a step that aligns with the objectives of the AfCFTA. \n \nWhile the 4th band is seen as a positive step for regional integration and industrialization\, it will\, in the interim have some negative effects for example on the purchasing power of citizens as imports from outside of the EAC become more expensive. \n \nThe session will unpack the 4th band CET its implementation and impact for private sector.
